The coverage gaps that cost framing contractors the most.
Most agents hand a framer a generic contractor policy and call it done. Then a fall claim hits and the height exclusion kicks in — or the lumber walks off the site and there’s no coverage at all. We underwrite the parts of your operation everyone else leaves out.
Run by people who know the trades
Contractors Choice Agency was founded in 2005 by people from the trades. We’ve walked framing jobsites, read the height exclusions, and know what a stolen nailer or a fall claim really costs a crew.
Contractor-only specialists
We only place contractor insurance. No personal lines, no restaurants, no retail — just contractors.
20+ years of experience
Contractors Choice Agency has placed contractor programs since 2005. We know the markets, the exclusions, and the traps.

Framing crews that found coverage that actually pays.
“This site taught me more about GL and completed operations in an hour than I learned in 10 years of running crews. Walked into my next GC negotiation actually understanding what I was signing.”
Marcus T.
General Contractor · Texas
“I always thought professional liability was just for architects. The school module on design-build explained exactly why I needed it. Now I carry both GL and E&O and sleep better.”
Jennifer K.
Design-Build Contractor · Colorado
“The workers' comp class codes module saved me real money — I was misclassified for two years. Fixed it, got a premium credit. These guys actually know contractor insurance.”
Roberto V.
HVAC Contractor · Florida
Framing contractor insurance, in plain English.
Contractor Insurance School is an educational platform operated by Contractors Choice Agency. We teach contractors exactly what each coverage line does — and then place it for them through A-rated specialty markets. Education first, placement second.
Yes, in nearly every case. Most GC contracts, licensing boards, and project owners require it. GL covers third-party bodily injury and property damage, and protects you if a client or third party sues over your work.
GL covers physical acts — what your crew physically does or fails to do. Professional liability (E&O) covers errors in professional services — design, consulting, specifications. If you do design-build work, you likely need both.
It depends on your trade, revenue, crew size, and claims history. A small contractor might pay $1,500–$4,500/year for GL alone. A full program — GL, workers' comp, commercial auto, tools, and umbrella — might run $6,000–$20,000+ depending on size.
Typically about 15 minutes for a standard program once we have your basic business information. Complex programs with multiple lines or large crews may take a bit longer.
Contractors Choice Agency is licensed in all 50 states. We can bind and service contractor coverage anywhere in the US.
All of them — general contractors, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, roofing, concrete, masonry, landscaping, demolition, specialty trades, and more. If you hold a contractor license or operate as a contractor, we likely have a market for you.
No. GL covers third-party claims, not your own property. Your tools need an inland marine floater — a tools and equipment policy. GL won't pay if your tools are stolen from your truck or damaged on the jobsite.
Your EMR is a multiplier applied to your workers' comp premium based on your actual claims history vs. what's expected for contractors your size and trade. Below 1.00 means better-than-average history (premium discount). Above 1.00 means worse (surcharge). Many GC prequalifications require an EMR below 1.0.
Umbrella sits above your primary GL, auto, and employers liability policies. When a single claim exhausts your primary limits, umbrella picks up the excess — up to its own limit. Most GC subcontracts now require $2M–$10M umbrella limits.
A surety bond is a three-party guarantee — you (the principal), the obligee (client or licensing board), and the surety (bonding company). If you fail to perform, the surety pays the obligee and then seeks reimbursement from you. Insurance pays you; a bond pays against you if you default.
It depends on your state and whether you have employees. Sole proprietors without employees are often exempt, but some states still require it. Additionally, many GC subcontracts require you to carry WC even as a sole proprietor. Check your state's requirements and your subcontract terms.
Completed operations extends your GL to cover claims that arise after a job is finished. If a structure you built fails months or years later and causes injury or property damage, completed operations coverage pays the claim. It's included in most CGL policies and required by most GC contracts.
Yes. Call 844-967-5247 and a specialist will walk through your coverage, identify gaps, and recommend improvements — no cost, no obligation.
An AI endorsement extends your GL to protect a third party — usually a GC or property owner — for liability arising from your work. Subcontracts typically require you to add the GC as an AI on a primary and non-contributory basis.
HNOA covers your liability when employees use their personal vehicles for business or when you rent vehicles for work. Standard GL doesn't cover auto liability — you need either a commercial auto policy or an HNOA endorsement.
Yes. Several of our carrier partners offer payroll-integrated workers' comp billing that calculates premium in real time against each payroll run, eliminating large year-end audit surprises.
Contact us at 844-967-5247 immediately after a loss — we assist with same-day claims reporting. Document the loss thoroughly, preserve evidence, and don't admit fault or make payments before consulting your insurer.
A COI is a one-page document that summarizes your coverage — carrier, policy numbers, limits, effective dates, and any additional insureds. GCs and project owners require you to provide one before work starts. We issue them quickly once coverage is bound.
Choose a coverage course above to learn, or call 844-967-5247 to speak with a specialist. We can educate you on any coverage line and deliver a quote in about 15 minutes.
